Dr. Michael J. Fredrick Short Bio

Hello Insights 21 Podcast,

My name is Dr. Michael Fredrick and I’m an Associate professor of Kinesiology at JCC in Texas. I was born in St. Louis, Missouri and raised mostly in the St. Louis metro area and went to college around the Show Me state studying Business, Philosophy, and Physical Education. My father was a successful businessman at Fredrick Plumbing Company for 30 years in St. Louis, Missouri. I worked in my father’s plumbing business for 10 years and studied business before choosing to become a college professor in ESS and sport management.

After earning 4 college degrees at 4 different colleges in Missouri, I earned my Ph.D. in Exercise & Sport Science at University of Utah in Salt Lake City in 1999 focusing on sport psychology, pedagogy (teacher / coaching education), and counseling psychology. I played soccer, baseball in grade school and football, wrestling, track in high school in St. Louis. In college, I was a sport karate points fighter and kickboxer for 10 years where I competed in over 100 sport karate tournaments and completed 3 St. George, Utah marathons while in graduate school at Utah.

Since earning my Ph.D. in 1999, I’ve taught at 22 Colleges / Universities including 12 full-time positions and 10 adjunct positions mostly at community colleges. My teaching philosophy follows the KISS principle = Keep it simple, Smart! Bruce Lee said, “Simplicity is the key to brilliance.” Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, according to Leonardo Da Vinci. My best teachers made the content simple while making learning interesting and fun while applying the principles in class to your career and real life. That is always my goal to make the content simple and practical so everyone can understand and apply what they learn to their everyday lives. Also, teach critical thinking skills so students know how to think for themselves and make good choices. Socrates taught, “Knowledge is virtue and virtue leads to happiness.”

The main sports teams that I follow are the St. Louis Blues & Cardinals, Kansas City Chiefs & Royals, and Missouri Tigers athletics since I earned my Master’s of Education in Sport Administration at Mizzou. Finally, I’ve traveled to every state but Alaska and lived in 11 states: MO, UT, IL, TN, AZ, AL, OK, NC, IA, NM, & TX. Also, I was an International professor of Health & PE in Malaysia, Borneo, and taught sport psychology at the Chinese Olympic Training center in Shanghai, China. My main hobbies are sports, music, movies, reading books, lifelong learning, speakers, and travel.

Hope you learn a lot, do your best, have fun, and learn something new that you can apply to your career and life!

Best wishes,

Dr. Michael J Fredrick (Ph.D. Exercise & Sport Science, Sport Psychology, Pedagogy)

Philosophy of Education

Education is the key to success in life! “Knowledge is virtue and virtue leads to happiness,” according to Socrates. A virtuous person acts in accordance with their knowledge. Therefore, you teach people what the good is and how to achieve it. My goal has been to obtain a Ph.D. in sport psychology in order to teach at the college level and work with athletes, coaches, and parents. I feel that my education, influences, and experience in sport and life justify my goal. I’ve believed and followed the slogan, “Knowledge is power” while earning five college degrees and a Black Belt in Karate.

In my lifetime, I’ve been fortunate to have had a few teachers who have influenced my life greatly. Mr. Dennett, my 5th grade history and physical education teacher, challenged me to strive to be my best. He made learning interesting and fun, not feared. Mrs. Vires, my 10th grade language teacher, instilled confidence in me when I really needed it. She led me to realize that everyone has special gifts and that we all must utilize our individual talents fully to grow as a person and be our best self. Sid Gee, a 7th degree Black Belt in Chinese Kenpo and Nationally rated competitor in the 1980’s, inspired me to do my best in karate in and out of the ring. Sid was a great teacher who made me realize that nothing is given to you in this life. You must work hard and never give up to get whatever you want. He taught me the meaning of discipline, self-control, commitment, courage, humility, perseverance, confidence, and integrity.

I began to realize the true benefits of education at East Central College in Union, MO. Mr. Knudsen, my undergraduate philosophy professor and best teacher of my entire life, taught the importance of realizing your individual potential, doing your absolute best at all times, using the educational process to solve life problems, true concern for the needs of others, the fact that we are all put here for a purpose and we have the duty to fulfill that purpose. He showed me that great teachers can have a powerful, positive influence on the lives of others. In my mind, he was the ideal teacher because he was intelligent, well educated, open-minded, down to earth, simple, pragmatic, empathic, altruistic, and humble. He taught me some great ideas for life at the community college level such as: seeking wisdom, truth, critical thinking, moral integrity, intellectual virtue, faith, moderation, practicality, volition or will, self-fulfillment, autonomy, and becoming educated to increase life’s options. Some of my greatest personal and life changing education were experienced at the Community College level. This past learning inspired me to strive to be my best and continue my education to earn two Bachelor’s degrees (BA – SLU, BS – UMSL) a Master’s degree (Missouri), a Black Belt in Karate, finish running three marathons, and complete a Ph.D. (Utah). These same lessons I want to pass on to my students in a similar way.

In graduate school at the University of Missouri, Dr. Rick McGuire introduced me to the field of sport psychology. The concept of training the mind, as well as the body, in developing the total athlete was interesting to me. His enthusiasm in teaching the psychological concepts of mental training was inspiring. It was exciting to study in this new and growing field. He presented his ideas in a clear, positive, and practical way which could be related to your own life. In the doctoral program at the University of Utah, Dr. Keith Henschen, who is considered one of the top applied sport psychologists in the United States and one of the best in the world, taught many cutting edge ideas and concepts about sport psychology. For example, he taught about psychometric testing in sport psychology, the five cardinal mental skills (i.e. relaxation, imagery, concentration, positive self-talk, & mental routines) to allow performer’s the opportunity to reach the zone and reach it more often, group dynamics of teams, and altered states of consciousness, among others. He is a top professional in the field and has worked with many elite, junior, college, Olympic, and professional athletes (Utah Jazz, Utah/BYU athletics). He is highly published, presents often, and was the president of AAHPERD (American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance – the largest teacher organization for physical educators in the United States) in 1997. He is a brilliant thinker and has a great amount of experience in the field. He has taught me about the values of personal excellence, personal responsibility, and being into the process.

My sport experience consists mostly of soccer & baseball in grade school, while competing in football, wrestling, & track in high school, and mostly karate point fighting, running throughout college. I‘ve competed in over 100 tournaments at the local, regional, and national level while placing at all levels. As a Brown Belt in the 1987 I was rated #2 locally in St. Louis and #3 in the Midwest region. As a Black Belt in 1990, I was rated as the #2 lightweight in the St. Louis area and the #5 fighter in the Midwest region. In addition, I have successfully completed three St. George (Utah) Marathons in 1994, 1995, and 1996. Also, I’ve worked toward my 2nd degree Black Belt in Kenpo.

My work experience revolves mostly around my father’s family plumbing business. He was a self-made business man who built up and ran his own business in the St. Louis area for 30 years. In 1979, when I was 16 years old, I began working for my father who taught me the benefits of hard work and perseverance, and continued to work for him the next 10 years in many different capacities. The experience I gained in the field from his men and from him in the office was invaluable. He taught me about the realization of the American dream of starting with nothing and working toward great wealth and success by virtues of your own hard work and persistence related efforts. My mother has always been very supportive of my life and dreams by telling me that I could do anything that I put my mind to, to always work hard, never give up, and give your life over to a strong faith in God. My parents have always supported my dreams in education, while continuing to support my decision to pursue teaching and education. I’ve applied that support to all my College teaching jobs while teaching at Quincy University in Quincy, Illinois, Harris-Stowe State College in St. Louis, Missouri, University of Missouri – St. Louis, Rock Valley College, St. Charles Community College, East Central College in Union, MO, Webster University, Lane College in Jackson, TN, William Woods University, Lincoln University, USSA in Malaysia & Shanghai, China, Bacone Indian College Warriors, Elizabeth City State University, Briar Cliff University, & University of the Southwest in New Mexico.

I’m fortunate to be in a position to contribute to the education and personal fulfillment of others in the field of education and sport. I’ve been very fortunate to have great teachers and mentors in my life and am blessed to be in a position to have a similar influence on my students and athletes now and in the future. Dewey’s philosophy of education (called pragmatism) is actualized well in American society with the realization of colleges that promote and bring education to the people and reinforce the fact that “the mark of intelligence is the ability to solve your own problems.” In whatever my pursuits are in life, I want to be the best Michael J. Fredrick that I can be and positively impact the lives of others. I ‘m thankful for all the opportunities created by God, my family, friends, and great teachers!

Insights21 MISSION = We stand up for the innocent, vulnerable children/adults who are survivors of abuse/trauma and we together as a community become a voice for the voiceless. We stand up for others and listen to their personal stories with respect, understanding and empathy. We raise awareness & education on important issues, seek solutions to real life problems, promote selfless service, and advocacy for victim /survivor /overcomer/ warriors. We seek to heal and elevate courageous warriors who step forward to tell their stories. We support people from vulnerable populations including poverty caused neglect, homeless, youth runaways (age 5-25) adopted/Foster children, addictions (alcohol, drugs, porn, sex, others), mental health problems, child/domestic/sexual abuse, trauma, and teen pregnancy. It’s important to notice, support, and defend the vulnerable to reduce human trafficking victims. Strong community, support, faith, prayer, love, empathy, and understanding works wonders. We are strong while others are weak and we are loud while others are silent. We take action while others just watch. We elevate and honor survivors from all backgrounds.

Survivor Truth, Listen with Respect, Support:

Individual’s who escape abuse and torture deserve the utmost respect and support. These people have risked it all to heal and stand up for the truth. These people are heroes and angels who hold a horrific reality for everyone else. They suffered and escaped, and for that, we should bow our head in reverence and listen to their stories.

*The more unbelievable a story is the more believable it should be! -Utah AG in regard to HT

KK’s message to Society about Victors, Survivors, Overcomers:

Just because you have never seen it or you don’t have an orientation toward it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t exist. One of the worst things you can do to a survivor or victor is to discredit them and tell them that what they are telling you or what they experienced is not real. There are so many instances when people try to discredit survivors rather than support them… The Attorney General of Utah said this about Human Trafficking and it applies here too. The more unbelievable a story is the more believable it should be! Because why would anyone make that up (in regards to Human Trafficking & SRA)? If you can’t see it and you don’t acknowledge it, then you can’t affect it. You can’t change it! And as long as people are saying that doesn’t exist, it isn’t real. Then, the resources aren’t going to be there to fight it and they are not going to be there to shut it down…so that is the actual trauma but then for a survivor when you are looking at behavior and you’re judging or you are seeing something that is not pleasant or admirable. I say step back and just consider for a second if you have gone through any amount of their experience would you be acting or living differently?
